Exemptions Surge As Parents And Doctors Do ‘Hail Mary’ Around Vaccine Laws

Despite passage of a California law three years ago to prevent parents from claiming personal or religious beliefs to avoid vaccinating their children, many parents have found end runs around the new law, often with the help of doctors who are granting medical exemptions in less than scrupulous methods.

It’s sort of the Hail Mary of the vaccine refusers who are trying to circumvent SB 277 . . . . It’s really scary stuff. We have pockets in our community that are just waiting for measles to rip through their schools,” said Dr. Brian Prystowsky, a Santa Rosa pediatrician.
