California sues over Trump move to block green cards for poor immigrants

California Governor Gavin Newsom and Attorney General Xavier Becerra announced that the state will be suing the Trump administration to block the new public charge rule. The rule makes it easier for the administration to deny green cards and visas to immigrants who rely on public benefits, including Medi-Cal. Advocates across the state have emphasized that the rule is already causing immigrants to stop accessing health care services for fear it will be used against them in immigration proceedings.

In announcing the lawsuit, AG Becerra stated:

This cruel policy would force working parents and families across the nation to forego basic necessities like food, housing, and healthcare out of fear. We will fight this unlawful rule every step of the way.”
